چکیده

A molecular dynamics model has been developed to investigate the evolution of the internal crack of nano scale during heating or compressive loading in BCC Fe. The initial configuration does not contain any pre-existing dislocations. In the case of heating, temperature shows a significant effect on crack evolution and the critical temperature at which the crack healing becomes possible is 673 K. In the case of compressive loading, the crack can be healed at 40 K at a loading rate 0.025 × 1018 Pa·m/s in 6 × 10 s. The diffusion of Fe atoms into the crack area results in the healing process. However, dislocations and voids appear during healing and their positions change continuously.

Modelling of the evolution of crack of nanoscale in iron

Metal owns the ability of self-healing to some extent, and the ability of the internal crack healing is most desirable for improving the reliability of metal. A molecular dynamics simulation has been further developed to investigate the evolution of a nanoscale crack in body centred cubic Fe crystal under the conditions of heating or compressive pressure. When system temperature drops, the evol...

Effect of Compressive Residual Stress on the Corner Crack Growth

In the present study, plasticity induced crack closure (PICC) concept and three dimensional (3D) finite element methods (FEM) are used to study the effect of compressive residual stress field on the fatigue crack growth from a hole. To investigate the effect of compressive residual stress on crack opening levels and crack shape evolution, Carlson’s experiments were simulated. Crack shape evolut...

Fatigue crack growth characteristics of Fe and Ni under cyclic loading using a quasi-continuum method

A quasi-continuum (QC) method based on the embedded atom method (EAM) potential was employed to investigate the fatigue crack growth and expansion characteristics of single-crystal Fe and Ni under cyclic loading modes I and II. In particular, the crack growth and expansion characteristics of Fe and Ni under cyclic loading were evaluated in terms of atomic stress fields and force–distance curves...

Healing of nanocracks by disclinations.

We present a new mechanism--discovered using molecular dynamics simulations--that leads to complete healing of nanocracks. This mechanism relies on the generation of crystal defects known as disclinations by migrating grain boundaries. Crack healing by disclinations does not require any compressive loads applied normal to the crack faces and even occurs under monotonic tensile loading. By closi...

Compressive Splitting Failure in Fiber Reinforced Unidirectional Composites Using Modified Shear Lag Theory

Compressive failure by splitting is studied herein via an analytical model. The use of a shear lag model to determine the stress state at the crack tip and the modeling of the region away from the crack tip by the 3D elasticity equations leads to a simple analytical expression is used to determine the compliance changes for both unsteady crack growth as well as steady state crack growth under c...
